Gasp
This weekend, Nov 14-16th, 2025, at Match Theatre in Houston, Texas, the dance ensemble Group Acorde will debut Gasp. I wrote the music for this work, a collaboration between three musicians and three dancers, that explores the visceral trauma of natural disasters (specifically Hurricane Harvey) through the lens of respiration and panic (e.g., having an asthma attack without an inhaler).
Gasp was a personal though. While the work responds to these collective trau
mas, it also became a quiet tribute to the memory of my mom. She long suffered from pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive and incurable lung disease. At first, it manifested in her endurance-she would get winded quickly. Things slowly degraded for her. She would spend her final year (2024) connected to an noisy oxygen concentrator, which during one of our many hurricanes only ran thanks to the generosity of a neighbor’s extension cord.
And so, this music charts a journey through the most fundamental and painful human experience: the struggle for breath.
